Prom Night (2008): Prom

Prom Night 2008

The most glamorous night of a teenager’s life turns into a bloodba…. wait, haven’t I said this before? This is a lite remake of the 1980 film, but aside from the name and the setting, pretty much everything else is different. Donna is a high school senior whose entire family is murdered by her obsessive stalker. When he escapes on prom night, she and her friends are in grave danger. This movie is full on prom. It follows the prep, the date picking the girls up, the limo, the dancing, the hotel room. It’s got it all. Very few films are more prom than this movie. I definitely recommend checking it out if you’re trying to get in the mood for prom. Is it great?  No. Is it fun? Yeah. Is it prom? Fuck yeah.

Prom Night (1980): Prom

Prom Night 1980

The most glamorous night of a teenager’s life turns into a bloodbath. This film stars Jamie Lee Curtis, one of the great scream queens. A young girl, Robin, is killed when her peers accidentally cause her to fall out a window while bullying her. Instead of telling someone, they all agree to keep it a secret and run away. However, someone saw them, and years later is seeking vengeance. Jamie Lee Curtis plays Kim, Robin’s older sister, who is subjected to watching her friends drop like flies around her. This film struggles to hold up, it’s a little slow and feels predictable now. But, it really is full of wonderful prom scenes and imagery so it’s not a bad film to throw on if you’re having a prom themed movie night. I definitely recommend putting it on your watchlist.

Leprechaun 4: In Space (1997): St. Patrick’s Day

Leprechaun 4.gif

Ya’ll…. I don’t know if I can take this. It’s so bad… so so bad. And they’re in space so it’s not even very St. Patrick’s Day related other than the fact that there’s a leprechaun in it. This movie is set in space because why not right? Friday the 13th did it, may as well. The leprechaun is some kind of alien I guess and kidnaps a space princess to be his bride so he can kill her father and be king. And she’s cool with it because the leprechaun has gold.  The military group funded by, I shit you not, Dr. Mittenhand, goes out to stop them. I don’t know. It’s so hard to follow this plot. At one point Dr, Mittenhand mutates and shouts that he is now MITTENSPIDER and it’s the highlight of the film. I mean, it’s part of the franchise so if you’re watching the whole thing for St. Patrick’s day, you may as well. I just.. it’s not good or that St. Patrick’s Day-ish so maybe skip it if you like your brain.

Leprechaun 3 (1995): St Patrick’s Day

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

You guys…. why did I decide to do this franchiiiiise. It’s so bad. The leprechaun is back and has more quippy one liners than ever. This time he’s terrorizing Las Vegas. When a young man loses everything he has in Vegas, the leprechaun’s medallion gives him the power to wish for whatever he wants. After going on an impossible winning streak, the hotel workers steal the coin and begin wishing. The leprechaun obviously wants his gold and goes on a murder spree to get it back. I have conflicting feelings on this movie, because on one hand, I like that it’s embracing its campiness and going for a silly vibe. At the same time, it’s so silly that it’s hard to watch at points. I mean, it fits for St. Patricks Day obviously, it’s about a leprechaun. I just… I don’t know, man, it’s just really terrible. Check it out or don’t… my brain hurts.

Leprechaun 2: St. Patrick’s Day

Leprechaun 2.jpg

Well… we might as well. There isn’t much content to review for St. Patrick’s Day so I’m forced to sit through this series. I reviewed the first one last year and I think I said like yeah it sucks but it’s campy so it’s fun. And I mean I basically have the same feelings on this one. The Leprechaun is back, this time in search of a bride. He finds her in teenage girl Bridget and while kidnapping her, loses some of his gold. Her boyfriend, Cody, has the gold and must figure out a way to rescue Bridget and defeat the leprechaun, along with his elderly father figure, Morty. This movie is set on St. Patrick’s Day and while also being about a leprechaun, it has several scenes of bars during St Patricks Day and a drinking contest. I enjoy this film better than the first one, it’s more fun and interesting. I definitely recommend checking this movie out for the holiday, in between binge drinking of course.

New Years Evil (1980): New Years Eve

It’s the end of another year, and I for one cannot believe 2018 is over already. As we look forward to 2019, let us enjoy a look back at the year 1980 with this bizarre slasher that is so weird it shoots the moon and ends up awesome. It’s so hard to even describe this movie without sounding like I’m making it up. So this famous rock queen who is hosting a televised New Years eve count down keeps getting calls from a spree killer who is killing someone in every time zone at midnight and making his way across the country to kill her once its midnight on the west coast. There’s a race to keep her safe and also a weird subplot about her adult son feeling neglected. This is all tied together with literal full length TERRIBLE musical numbers. You can read my full review on my horror movie blog. One thing this film has is lots of New Years eve spirit. I mean it’s… it’s something. I definitely recommend checking it out for some New Years eve fun, it will definitely give you a laugh if nothing else.

Gremlins (1984): Christmas

Gremlins

I have a deep never-ending love for Gizmo. This movie follows a young man who gets a mysterious pet from his father for Christmas. His Mogwai, who he calls Gizmo, comes with a strict set of rules: don’t expose them to sunlight, don’t get them wet, and don’t feed them after midnight. Billy and Gizmo bond quite quickly, but when he accidentally gets wet 5 more, sinister, Mogwai appear, including Spike, the ring leader of the crew. They bully Gizmo and soon trick Billy into feeding them after midnight. This is when the chaos truly begins. Their antics sends the town into a Christmas frenzy as they smoke, drink, and murder. This movie is campy, funny, and filled to the brim with 80’s Christmas aesthetic. I definitely recommend checking this out for the holiday if you haven’t already. It will make you want a Gizmo for Christmas… just don’t get him wet.

The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018): Halloween

The Strangers Prey at Night

So I reviewed the original Strangers film and my opinion is its not bad, not great. It’s okay but because it taps into such a common fear it has a widespread appeal for horror fans and the general public alike. When this came out I was skeptical and kind of annoyed as I didn’t see the need for this film. But after watching it, I think I may like it as much as the original? I think the protagonists actually make some very realistic choices and the acting from them is impressive. The part that really brings the film down for me is the cartoonish abilities of the killers. But aside from that, I think this film is a fun watch for Halloween. It’s scary enough and does satirize some aspects of horror that can be funny for horror fans. Check this one out if you’ve exhausted the horror classics and you want something new.

The Strangers (2008): Halloween

The Strangers.jpg

So I remember when this film came out 10 years ago, everyone talked about how terrifying it was and how it was the scariest film of all time. I remember watching it and enjoying it but the overhyping kind of ruined it for me a little bit. I’ve watched it several times over the years and its still entertaining, if not a little boring at times. I think the reason this film is so scary is because it taps into our natural fear of someone invading our home at random and being a victim for no reason. It’s definitely a scary film that will have you double checking the locks before you go to bed that night. This film is best viewed in the dark, under a blanket, with someone you trust nearby. There isn’t any Halloween imagery or themes, but the theme of murder and stalking is always in the spirit of the haunted holiday.
